I’ve found it handy on several occasions to organise navigation from a parent page to its children using featured images. The idea is that the parent displays the featured images from the children and those images are used for navigation. The code varies from case to case but usually looks something like this:

<div class="gallery">
 <?php
 global $post;
 $myposts = get_pages('parent='.$post->ID.'&number=99&sort_column=menu_order&sort_order=asc');
 foreach($myposts as $post) :
 setup_postdata($post); ?>
 <div class="gallery-item">
 <a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>" title="<?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_post_thumbnail(''); ?></a>
 <a class="wp-caption-text" href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a>
 </div>
 <?php endforeach; ?>
 </div>
